    AboitizPower decommissions Cebu diesel unit

Aboitiz Power Corp., the listed power generation and distribution unit of the Aboitiz Group, said its subsidiary, East Asia Utilities Corporation (EAUC), has completed the decommissioning and deregistration of its 12.4 MW Diesel Generator Unit 1 at the Bunker C-fired power plant in Mactan Export Processing Zone 1 (MEPZ 1), Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.

The Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) confirmed the unit was officially deregistered from the system effective October 30. EAUC had also secured prior clearances from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), in line with DOE guidelines on decommissioning and mothballing of generating plants.

EAUC said the decision followed a technical incident in May 2024. After thorough evaluation, the company determined the unit was no longer viable for repair or continued operation. Its three other generating units at the Cebu facility remain fully operational and unaffected by the decommissioning.

The Bunker C-fired plant, wholly owned by AboitizPower through EAUC, has been serving MEPZ 1 and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) since May 25, 1998. EAUC operates and maintains the plant to ensure reliable power supply to the export processing zone and the wider market.

AboitizPower said the deregistration aligns with its ongoing efforts to modernize its generation portfolio and enhance operational efficiency. The company continues to monitor the performance of its remaining units while exploring opportunities to strengthen energy supply for industrial customers in Cebu and the Visayas region.

The move reflects broader trends in the Philippine energy sector toward retiring aging or non-viable generation units while maintaining grid stability and regulatory compliance.
