Maynilad locks concession extension, maps growth plan

Maynilad Water Services Inc. has secured a major regulatory boost with a revised concession agreement (RCA) from the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), extending its concession to January 21, 2047. The move aligns the RCA with its legislative franchise under Republic Act No. 11600, providing long-term operational certainty.

The amendment also updates Rate Rebasing Dates to Januaryn 1, 2038 and January 1, 2043, giving the company clear timelines for tariff adjustments. Additionally, the Republic Undertaking—first issued on May 10, 2023 and retroactive to July 1, 2022—has been extended to the new expiration date, confirmed by the Department of Finance and the Philippine government.

“This extension secures the framework for sustainable service delivery and investment,” a company spokesperson said. “It allows us to modernize infrastructure, enhance reliability, and meet rising water demand in Metro Manila.”

The revised terms offer regulatory clarity for long-term planning, enabling Maynilad Water to invest in capacity expansion, operational efficiency, and sustainability measures. Stakeholders view the update as a critical step for financial stability and long-term growth in the capital’s water sector.

With Metro Manila’s population continuing to expand, the extension provides a foundation for decades of reliable water service, while supporting broader public-private collaboration in essential utilities.
