The USA Cheese Guild is expanding its training and engagement programs in the Philippines as the country emerges as one of the fastest-growing markets for American agricultural products. The initiative aims to deepen local expertise and broaden appreciation for USA Cheeses among chefs, retailers, and consumers.
The Philippines ranks 9th among global destinations for US agricultural exports, with shipments rising 33 percent from 2013 to 2023. Dairy leads this growth, with American cheese exports increasing 24 percent in 2024. Cream cheese dominates, while white cheddar, sharp cheddar, and Monterey Jack are steadily gaining traction.
Consumption trends underscore the opportunity. Research from the U.S. Dairy Export Council shows 99 percent of middle- to high-income urban consumers eat cheese, and 82 percent of recent consumers enjoy it at least weekly. The rising demand is driving local food businesses to innovate and expand menu offerings.
To support this shift, the USA Cheese Guild launched the USA Cheese Specialist Certification Program in 2024. The multi-track training equips culinary students, chefs, retailers, and distributors with knowledge of cheese varieties, handling, storage, applications, and pairings.
“The Philippines is ready for cheese innovation at every table,” said Dali Ghazalay, USDEC Regional Director – Southeast Asia. “Our mission is to inspire chefs, retailers, and consumers to discover the flavors, quality, and creativity that USA Cheeses bring to their kitchens.”
More than 200 specialists have completed the training, a development welcomed by retailers. “The USA produces many cheeses that can match European ones in taste and quality,” said Rowena Santiago of S&R Membership Shopping. Karen Evangelista of The Marketplace added that USA Cheeses are ideal for ready-to-go meals, adding flavor, quality, and comfort.
Beyond education, the Guild is collaborating with restaurants, including Subway Philippines, to introduce limited-edition offerings that highlight the versatility and quality of USA Cheeses, reinforcing long-term growth in the market.
