Maya has tapped M Pioneer Insurance Inc. In offering SafeTrip travel insurance directly in the Maya app, giving Filipino travelers simple, affordable, and easy access to protection before they go abroad.
SafeTrip can be purchased with just a few taps inside the app at discounted prices. It offers broad coverage, including medical emergencies, evacuation, flight delays, lost baggage, trip cancellations, and even selected high-risk activities. Policies are issued instantly, without paperwork or long waits, so travelers can get protection quickly whenever they need it.
Maya said the goal is to break down the barriers that often stop people from buying insurance, such as cost and complicated traditional sales processes. By embedding SafeTrip in everyday digital finance habits, travelers can add protection easily as part of their regular use of the app.
M Pioneer noted the partnership helps deliver insurance in a digital, on-demand way instead of through slower traditional channels, making coverage more affordable and widely available.
The launch comes against a backdrop of low overall insurance use in the Philippines.
Data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas show that uptake of private insurance (excluding government coverage such as PhilHealth) is modest, with only a small share of adults holding private policies and insurance ownership having declined over recent years.
Meanwhile, insurance penetration — the ratio of insurance premiums to the country’s economic output — remains low at around 1.79 percent of GDP, even as it rises gradually, underscoring that many Filipinos still lack formal coverage.
By making travel insurance easy to understand, quick to buy, and cost-effective, Maya aims to help more Filipinos bridge that protection gap, integrating insurance into everyday digital financial life.
