Ramon S. Ang: The mind that turned a brewery into a nation-building conglomerate

Ramon See Ang, born on January 14, 1954, in Tondo, Manila, is one of the country’s most influential corporate figures. The son of an automobile repair shop owner, Ang learned early lessons in hard work and mechanical ingenuity, selling used Japanese car and truck engines and even aluminum wheels alongside the late billionaire Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr., a friendship forged through a shared love of vintage cars. He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Far Eastern University, a foundation that would inform both his practical approach to business and his problem-solving mindset.

Ang joined San Miguel Corporation in 1984 as a plant manager and steadily climbed the ranks, becoming executive vice president and chief operating officer in 1998 and president and CEO in 2002. Under his leadership, San Miguel transformed from a traditional brewery into one of the country’s most diversified conglomerates, with major interests spanning food and beverages, infrastructure, energy, aviation, and international ventures. He oversaw the acquisitions of Philippine Airlines and Petron Corporation, spearheaded the creation of SMC’s infrastructure arm—including toll roads like the Skyway System, TPLEX, and STAR Tollway—and drove the company’s expansion into power generation and renewable energy projects.

Known for his strategic foresight and operational rigor, Ang balances his corporate vision with a strong sense of humility and social responsibility. He has urged Filipinos to practice kindness daily and has supported initiatives in education, healthcare, disaster relief, and sports development. Despite managing a sprawling empire with over 45,000 employees, he remains approachable, often blending business acumen with practical wisdom and quiet humor.

A family man, Ang has nurtured the next generation of leaders, elevating his son John Paul to president and COO of San Miguel in 2024. He continues to personally oversee key acquisitions and investments, including increasing his stake in Top Frontier Investment Holdings to consolidate control over SMC. Beyond the boardroom, Ang remains a passionate car collector, a mentor, and a philanthropist, reflecting the same curiosity, ingenuity, and resilience that propelled him from Tondo workshops to the helm of one of the country’s most iconic corporations.
