Love option as singles date themselves

Valentine’s Day in the Philippines is getting a quiet makeover. What used to feel like a public referendum on your love life now looks more like a celebration of personal freedom, with a side of strategic spending.

A new report by Agile Data Solutions Inc., drawing on survey data from Hustle PH, found that 68 percent of single respondents are single by choice. Not “waiting.” Not “recovering.” They are deliberately opting out of relationships for now.

The firm calls the shift “Intentional Singlehood,” reframing single status as a conscious, self-directed decision instead of a temporary stop on the way to marriage.

“The idea that everyone must be in a relationship by a certain age is slowly losing its hold,” said Jason Gaguan, chairman and co-founder of Agile Data Solutions. “What we’re seeing is intentional singlehood. People are choosing stability, growth or peace before partnership.”

More than 40 percent of respondents said they are prioritizing personal, career or financial goals. Another 20 percent said they have yet to meet the right person. The common thread is sequencing. Relationships are being aligned with life plans rather than treated as proof of adulthood.

That logic is showing up in spending patterns. Around 80 percent of singles said spending on themselves makes them feel good, while nearly 73 percent reported emotional returns from self-spending.

Among Gen Z respondents, 42 percent said they celebrate themselves on February 14, and 29 percent reward themselves for hard work or stress.

Dinner for one is no longer a sad table. It can be a small victory lap. “Self-spending isn’t a substitute for romance,” Gaguan said. “It’s an expression of agency. People are choosing how to feel valued.”

With 64 percent saying Valentine’s now feels more about enjoyment than romance, the holiday is becoming flexible and self-defined. Retailers and brands must understand they should market self-investment, not just couplehood.

Cupid may still sell roses, but independence is proving just as bankable.
