DPWH speeds up Udalo Bridge construction to improve travel in Mindoro

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is fast-tracking the completion of the Udalo Bridge along the Abra De Ilog-Puerto Galera Road, a key missing link of the Mindoro Circumferential Road that has been stalled for over three years.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon stressed the urgency of finishing the remaining 25 meters of the bridge, noting that residents currently have to wade through the river to cross safely. “It’s sad because people’s lives are being played with… what if it’s the rainy season?” Dizon said during his inspection.

The DPWH also plans to complete nearly seven kilometers of the Circumferential Road after canceling the previous contractor’s contract. The project aims to connect Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, linking Puerto Galera and Abra de Ilog.

Currently 60 percent complete, the road project has faced delays from rugged terrain, right-of-way issues, and contractor problems. Once finished, it is expected to cut travel time between Calapan and Mamburao from six hours to just two, with completion targeted by the end of 2026.
