PAL secures Ba2 rating, eyes funding access

Philippine Airlines has secured a first-time Ba2 corporate family rating from Moody’s Ratings, marking a key milestone in its recovery and positioning the airline for broader access to global funding.

The stable outlook reflects confidence in PAL’s improved financial profile following its 2021 restructuring, as well as its solid market position as the country’s flag carrier. The Ba2 rating—hree notches below the Philippines’ investment-grade sovereign rating—signals relatively strong creditworthiness in a capital-intensive and volatile aviation sector.

PAL said the rating validates efforts over the past five years to streamline operations, rebuild its network, and strengthen its balance sheet. President Richard Nuttall noted that the rating would “strategically broaden” funding options while offering investors an independent gauge of the airline’s financial resilience.

Moody’s cited PAL’s steady domestic and international market share, along with its defensible long-haul routes, as key strengths. It also highlighted a leaner cost structure and improved liquidity following the airline’s Chapter 11 restructuring.

Still, the rating agency flagged persistent risks, particularly exposure to fuel price volatility and shifting travel demand. These risks have become more pronounced amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have roiled global energy markets. PAL, however, has secured fuel supply through June 2026, helping cushion near-term shocks.

The stable outlook suggests Moody’s expects PAL to maintain disciplined fleet expansion while keeping credit metrics within acceptable levels.

Notably, PAL is the first airline in Southeast Asia to obtain a public international credit rating from any of the “Big Three” agencies, a move that could set a precedent for regional carriers seeking diversified funding sources as the industry navigates rising costs and uneven demand recovery.

The rating exercise was supported by Deutsche Bank as sole credit rating advisor.
