The Department of Agriculture (DA) said at least eight institutional buyers are interested in directly purchasing agricultural products, particularly red onions, from farmers in Mindoro.
In a virtual market matching organized by the DA, buyers signaled a monthly demand of about 5 to 16 metric tons of red onions. This creates an opportunity for Mindoro farmers to sell directly to large buyers instead of going through middlemen.
Some buyers also showed interest in other crops such as garlic, bell pepper, ginger, and calamansi, opening the door for broader supply partnerships.
Participants included several farmer groups, cooperatives, and local agriculture offices across Mindoro. On the buyer side, companies such as Walter Mart Supermarket, Robinsons Supermarket, Nutri-Asia, and others joined the discussions.
One key agreement allows farmer groups to set their own farmgate and delivery prices to help ensure fair earnings.
The DA said deliveries are planned for major markets like Cavite and Metro Manila, with government transport support to help lower costs. The New Las Piñas Market also committed to give priority selling space to Mindoro farmers.
Officials said the goal is to build long-term, profitable partnerships between farmers and institutional buyers. However, the DA clarified that the demand is still based on initial interest, with final agreements on price, volume, and delivery schedules yet to be completed.
