New tourism chief signals shift toward investment-led growth

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed Dita Angara-Mathay as secretary of the Department of Tourism, tapping a veteran economic diplomat to steer the sector toward a more investment-driven trajectory.

Announced Friday by the Presidential Communications Office, the appointment signals a strategic pivot: positioning tourism not merely as a cultural asset, but as a catalyst for jobs, enterprise development, and regional expansion.

Angara-Mathay brings decades of experience in trade and international economic engagement. Most recently, she served as commercial counselor at the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Tokyo, where she cultivated partnerships with Japanese firms—key players in one of the Philippines’ largest sources of investment, technology, and visitor arrivals.

Her track record suggests a policy approach anchored on converting global linkages into domestic gains. Throughout her career, she has led initiatives aimed at channeling foreign partnerships into tangible outcomes, particularly for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of the tourism value chain.

The administration appears intent on leveraging this expertise to deepen tourism’s economic impact. Beyond boosting arrivals, the focus is expected to shift toward attracting tourism-related investments, strengthening supply chains, and integrating local industries—from hospitality to agriculture—into a broader growth strategy.

This comes at a time when competition for international travelers and capital is intensifying across the region. By aligning tourism with investment promotion, policymakers are betting on a multiplier effect: increased visitor spending paired with longer-term capital inflows.

Angara-Mathay’s challenge will be execution—ensuring that policy alignment translates into inclusive growth on the ground. If successful, her leadership could redefine tourism as not just a showcase of destinations, but a cornerstone of economic resilience.
