Lender’s solar mortgage program posts 89% expansion

The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) reported an 89 percent increase in its solar financing portfolio in 2025, only one year after introducing its Solar Mortgage offering under BPI Green Solutions in 2024. The strong growth shows more Filipino homeowners are turning to solar power to cut electricity expenses and build long-term savings.

Through the program, homeowners can fund solar panel installation using their property as basis for financing. Existing BPI housing loan clients may also add the cost of solar systems to their current loan, combining the amount into their existing account instead of applying for a separate one.

Dex Cuajotor, BPI head of retail lending and bancassurance, noted that rising demand for solar energy clearly drives interest in dedicated green financing options. “This market shift validates our commitment to empowering Filipino households with accessible financial options as they transition toward more sustainable and cost-effective energy alternatives,” he said. The growth also aligns with wider national trends, as the Energy Regulation Commission records over 22,000 customers already using solar technology under the net metering program.

Applying for the solar mortgage is straightforward: homeowners first get a price quote from their chosen solar provider, then submit applications via any BPI branch, the bank’s official website, or the BPI Virtual Store hotline. Only basic documents such as a valid government ID and proof of income are required. Once approved, customers may proceed with installing their solar power system.

Qualified borrowers enjoy special perks including fixed interest rates as low as 5.99 percent for the first year, free first appraisal worth ₱5,000, and up to ₱50,000 in waived bank fees. Zero cash-out options are also available to help homeowners invest in renewable energy without heavy upfront costs. For instance, financing a ₱1 million solar setup over 10 years at the stated rate translates to an estimated monthly payment of roughly ₱11,090, making the shift to solar more affordable while steadily lowering utility bills over time.
