Businesses around the country turned significantly more optimistic in June this year, setting the stage for stronger economic growth as companies plan to expand operations and hire more workers over the coming year.
According to the latest Business Expectations Survey by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the overall business confidence index recovered from negative territory in May to reach neutral ground in June, with long-term expectations climbing to highly optimistic levels. This shift in sentiment carries strong economic significance, as rising confidence directly translates into increased corporate investments, job creation, and heightened business activity across various sectors nationwide.
The rebound was largely driven by expectations of lower oil prices and reduced energy costs, which ease operating expenses for businesses. Companies also anticipated a noticeable boost in consumer spending tied to the nationwide reopening of schools during the month, injecting fresh momentum into household consumption.
Looking ahead, local firms expressed robust optimism for the next 12 months, supported by widespread plans across industry sectors to recruit additional staff and broaden their business footprints. While businesses remain wary of potential economic headwinds—such as geopolitical developments in the Middle East and concerns that inflation could breach the central bank’s 4 percent target ceiling in 2027—their sustained willingness to invest and expand highlights strong resilience and underlying confidence in the national economy’s trajectory.
