Union Bank launches Apple Pay for cardholders

Union Bank of the Philippines announced Tuesday it will roll out Apple Pay for all its cardholders across the country.

Apple Pay offers a simple, secure and private payment method for in-store, in-app and online transactions. To pay in person, users only need to double-click their device’s side button, confirm their identity, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near a contactless payment terminal. Every purchase is protected by Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode, plus a unique one-time security code for each transaction.

The service works at most locations that accept contactless payments, including supermarkets, drugstores, restaurants, cafes and other retail shops. Users can also complete purchases faster on iPhone, iPad and Mac within apps or on websites, without re-entering account, card or delivery details.

“When building our next-generation bank, we aim to make daily banking and payments simpler, safer and more straightforward,” said Union Bank president and CEO Ana Aboitiz Delgado. “Adding Apple Pay gives our customers a smoother experience, letting them pay quickly and securely using the devices they already use every day, wherever they choose to shop.”

For extra safety, actual card numbers are never saved on Apple servers or the user’s device. Instead, the system creates a unique Device Account Number that is encrypted and stored in the Secure Element — a certified, industry-standard chip built to keep payment information protected.
