Michelin Keys boost Philippines’ push for high-value tourists

The Philippines is gaining ground in the race for high-spending travelers, with nine hotels now carrying Michelin Keys across Metro Manila and major island destinations.

The growing roster of internationally recognized luxury properties could help drive premium tourism spending beyond the capital, as the country seeks to attract more affluent visitors and strengthen its position in Asia’s competitive hospitality market.

The country now has nine Michelin Key hotels after El Nido Resorts Lagen Island in Palawan and Raffles Makati became its first Two-Michelin-Key properties, a distinction awarded for an “exceptional stay.”

Four hotels also earned their first One Michelin Key: NUSTAR Hotel Cebu, El Nido Resorts Pangulasian Island in Palawan, Hotel Okura Manila at Newport World Resorts, and Manami Resort in Negros Occidental.

Nay Palad Hideaway in Siargao, Fairmont Makati and Amanpulo in Palawan retained their One-Key distinctions.

The geographic spread gives the Philippines internationally recognized luxury properties across established and emerging destinations, supporting efforts to attract higher-value visitors and encourage tourism spending beyond the capital.

“Beyond the recognition itself, we see this as an opportunity to further position the Philippines as a destination where travelers can find exceptional stays, from our island resorts to our urban hotels,” Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay said.

She said the awards also strengthen the Philippine tourism brand while encouraging the hospitality industry to raise service standards.

Michelin Keys are the hotel counterpart of Michelin Stars for restaurants. Properties are assessed on criteria including architecture and design, service consistency, character, value and contribution to their location.

The latest recognitions give Philippine tourism another international benchmark as the country competes for premium travelers in Asia. Palawan accounts for three of the nine Michelin Key properties, underscoring the island province’s growing role in the country’s luxury tourism market.
