Manila to host second WTA event in 2027

Manila is set to host a new WTA 250 tournament in late 2027, giving the Philippines a second women’s professional tennis event and a potential new draw for higher-ranked players.

The Women’s Tennis Association on Thursday, October 1, unveiled its 2027 calendar, with the new Manila tournament scheduled for either October or November as part of a 55-event season across 26 countries and territories.

The Philippine Women’s Open, a WTA 125 event, will remain in January, meaning the new Manila tournament is an additional event rather than an upgrade or replacement.

The WTA 250 designation gives the late-season tournament a higher competitive tier, with more ranking points and prize money that could make it attractive to players further up the rankings. The eventual field will depend on player commitments and the final tournament schedule.

The addition gives Philippine fans two opportunities in the same year to see international women’s tennis on home soil, while providing the country with another platform to showcase its growing tennis scene.

It also comes as Alexandra Eala continues to raise the profile of Philippine tennis internationally.

Beyond Manila, the 2027 season will feature several significant changes. All combined WTA 1000 tournaments will award equal prize money for the first time, marking a major milestone in the Tour’s long-running push for financial equality.

The WTA will also introduce changes intended to reduce player commitments and provide greater flexibility, following consultations through its Tour Architecture Council, chaired by world No. 3 Jessica Pegula.

A new Tournament Investment Fund will provide targeted financial support to selected tournaments and markets as the WTA seeks to strengthen the Tour’s competitive and commercial landscape.

The season will culminate at the WTA Finals in Charlotte, North Carolina, the event’s new home from 2027 through 2029.

For Manila, the new October-November tournament could offer a late-season showcase — and a chance to bring a deeper slice of the women’s tennis elite to Philippine courts.
