International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) has handled four million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at its Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) in Croatia since taking over operations in 2011, underscoring the Port of Rijeka’s growing role as a gateway to Central and Southeast Europe.
The milestone comes five years after AGCT reached two million TEUs, pointing to rising container volumes through Croatia’s largest seaport and the terminal’s expanding links with inland European markets.
A significant share of cargo handled at AGCT moves beyond Croatia by rail and road to Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia. That hinterland reach has made terminal capacity and connectivity increasingly important as shipping lines seek access to markets across the region.
“Over the past 15 years, AGCT has become an increasingly important link between global shipping networks and inland markets across Central and Southeast Europe,” said Hans-Ole Madsen, ICTSI senior vice president and EMEA regional head.
ICTSI has invested in capacity and equipment under its 30-year partnership with Luka Rijeka, Croatia’s port operator.
AGCT completed a EUR35-million expansion program in late 2025, adding two super post-Panamax quay cranes and two hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes. The quay cranes allow the terminal to handle larger container vessels calling at Adriatic ports, while the hybrid yard equipment increases handling capacity and lowers fuel consumption.
The terminal is also transitioning from diesel-powered terminal tractors to electric units and converting existing gantry cranes to hybrid operation as part of efforts to reduce fuel use and improve operational efficiency.
AGCT Chief Executive Officer Iñigo Nuñez Mendibe said the four-million-TEU milestone reflects the terminal’s development during its 15 years under ICTSI and its growing role in regional logistics.
