As the nation marks Filipino Elderly Week (Oct 1–7), the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) reaffirms stronger commitment to its more than 600,000 pensioners and retirees—rolling out improved benefits, fairer rules, and simpler, fully digital services to boost financial security and ease of use.
GSIS chief Wick Veloso said care does not end at retirement: “We must protect their benefits and make processes easier to navigate.” Key reforms are already in place. Survivorship pensions now pay the full 50 percent without cap, and benefits no longer stop simply for living with a new partner—only remarriage ends them. The Christmas cash gift is safer too: missing the April revalidation deadline no longer means automatic loss, so long as requirements are completed later. Funeral aid rose from ₱30,000 to ₱50,000 starting July 13, with a separate ₱10,000 for eligible uniformed personnel.
Pension applications, annual revalidation, loans, and updates go fully digital via the GSIS Touch app—no office visit needed. Those who do go in get a QR queue system: get a number, wait anywhere, get a text when it’s your turn. Veloso summed it up: “Ginhawa means clear rules and transactions that respect their time.” GSIS pledged to keep strengthening programs that serve pensioners’ security and well-being.
