First Balfour, EDC to put up battery storage systems

Engineering and construction firm First Balfour Inc., has entered into contract with affiliate Energy Development Corp. (EDC) to set up three battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities.

In a statement, First Balfour signed the agreement last month under which the company will undertake engineering, procurement, and construction works for the balance of plant and connection assets of the BESS facilities.

According to EDC, the BESS facilities have a combined capacity of 40 megawatts co-located with geothermal power plants in Sorsogon, Leyte and Negros Oriental.

The BESS facilities will be used to store excess power from geothermal plants and supply the stored energy when and where it is needed.

The BESS itself is equipped by Fluence, a global provider of energy storage products and services as well as optimization software for renewables and storage.

First Balfour said the EDC’s BESS project is the first of its kind in its portfolio.

The EDC’s portfolio of energy projects total over 1,480 MW.

It generates 1,185.40 MW of geothermal power equal to 62 percent of total installed geothermal capacity, making the Philippines the third largest geothermal producer in the world.
