Bautista builds 5 more bike lanes in Luzon

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Monday broke ground at its various bike lane projects in Lipa and Batangas City as well as in Antipolo, Cainta, and San Mateo in Rizal.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said the support of local government units (LGUs) allowed the agency to continue creating more bike lanes nationwide.

“This year there will be around 400 kilometers of bike lanes in the country,” Bautista said in ceremonies marking the expansion of active transport infrastructure in the region.

According to him, more bike lanes will be built next year as the agency has asked for an additional budget to have additional bike lanes built nationwide.

With a target completion in the first quarter of 2024, the DOTr, with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), will establish 76.70-kilometer bike lanes on selected roads in the region.

The construction of bike lanes in Region IV-A has an approved budget of P151.7 million under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) for fiscal year 2022.

The Active Transport Program of the DOTr will expand the country’s protected bike lane network to 2,400 kilometers by 2028.

At present, the government already constructed 564 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Cebu, Metro Manila and Metro Davao.

The DOTr has allotted P500 million for the construction of more bike lanes and proper public transport stops this year.
