The Department of Transportation on Monday urged top business leaders in General Santos City to invest in government transport projects that improve mobility and boost connectivity in provinces across Mindanao.
“We invite business leaders inside this room to join us in this transformation of the country’s transport system,” Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista told members of the General Santos City Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The transport chief also discussed the planned expansion of the General Santos Airport which he said will be expanded to accommodate international air traffic.
With the General Santos Airport able to handle international flights, the South Cotabato province as host will experience an uptick in tourism, Bautista explained.
“While land acquisition for its expansion is ongoing, we need your support to build new hotels, resorts, restaurants and more,” he said of the support structures required to help the city and its environs expand and flurish.
Bautista also lauded local government executives for fully supporting the PUV modernization program (PUVMP).
He said the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) are committed to upgrade the Makar Port to ensure the efficiency of travel and trade movements at the port.
“I encourage you discuss any proposals with our maritime sector officials [for the improvement of the Makar Port],” Bautista said.
