Alternergy’s 100-MW wind unit links up with NGCP

Alternergy Holdings Corp. subsidiary Alternergy Tanay Wind Corp. (ATWC) has signed an interconnection agreement (ICA) with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) linking its 100-megawatt Tanay wind power project in Rizal Province to the national power line.

With the ICA in place, the Tanay wind project proceeds to the development phase and signing of commercial contracts having earlier been awarded confirmation of commerciality by the Department of Energy, particularly its wind turbine supply agreement and the balance of plant engineering, procurement and construction.

The Tanay wind project also qualifies under the second Green Energy Auction and seen completed by end-2025.

“The ICA signing for the Tanay wind power project is a big step. We are delighted to receive NGCP’s approval to connect considering the transmission challenges of any power project. NGCP’s approval is a positive response to fostering connectivity for renewable energy projects and increased critical energy infrastructures,” said Knud Hedeager, ATWC president, in a statement.

The ICA is the second such agreement Alternergy signed with NGCP in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, Alternergy’s Alabat wind power project linked up with the NGCP for the dispatch of renewable energy from its 64-MW power plant in Quezon Province.

“Similar to the ICA of the Alabat wind power project, NGCP stands to provide assistance to Alternergy’s Tanay wind power project which will contribute substantial renewable capacity to the grid to bolster the country’s energy sufficiency and sustainability… As the transmission network provider and system operator, NGCP’s mandate is to expand the capacity and reliability of the grid to accommodate new generation projects,” Anthony Almeda, NGCP president and chief executive officer, said.

Last year, Alternergy proposed developing up to 350 MW of power in three to five years broken down into 33-MW solar, 220-MW onshore wind and 50-MW run-of-river hydro projects.

More recently, Alternergy completed preliminary studies on the technical feasibility of pursuing offshore wind energy service contracts with Shell Overseas Investment B.V..

The study concluded that three of four sites analysed show positive indications and may be pursued further.
