SM Foundation invests in education to change people’s lives

The strong belief of SM Foundation that education is pivotal to lifting many Filipinos out of poverty has been underscored by the scholarship program it established 1993 and has since given around 4,200 deserving but poor students a chance at a better life.

Aside from scholarship grants, the social development arm of the SM Group has been investing in youth education by building school facilities and improving classroom availability to contribute to breaking the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

The journey of Fritz Mendez, one of the thousands that has benefited from the SM Group’s philanthropic initiatives, exemplifies the transformative impact of education. Despite facing significant challenges in his early life, including financial struggles and societal expectations, Mendez seized the opportunity provided by the SM Scholarship to pursue higher education.

Starting college later than most, Mendez didn’t let age hinder his determination. He immersed himself in both academic and extracurricular activities, discovering his talents in writing, performing, and leadership. The supportive environment of the scholarship program and his active participation in church activities played crucial roles in shaping his personal growth. Through these experiences, he developed essential life skills such as budgeting, time management, and a strong work ethic.

Upon graduating with a degree in Accounting Technology, Mendez embarked on a successful career at BDO Unibank, where he has risen to the position of senior teller and serves as the Regional Director of the BDO Employees Association for the Visayas. His professional journey reflects not only his individual achievement but also his commitment to supporting and uplifting others in his community.

SM founder Henry Sy believed that education is the best defense against poverty. For him, one of the most impactful ways to make a difference in a community is by helping a student attain a college degree — its multiplier effect goes on as that graduate eventually becomes capable of helping his family, the company he will work for and the society as a whole.
