    Bidders offer Meralco three times more baseload power than it needs under CSP

    The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has attracted eight power generation companies interested in supplying the distributor 600 megawatts worth of baseload power it needs by next year.

    The companies who turned up at the pre-bid conference Thursday include First Gen Corp. and subsidiaries First Gas Power Corp. and First NatGas Power Corp.

    Also interested in the upcoming competitive selection process CSP were Aboitiz Group affiliates Therma Luzon Inc. and GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co. as well as San Miguel Corp. affiliates Mariveles Power Generation Corp. and Masinloc Power Co. Ltd. 

    DMCI Group’s Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corp. was also present as well as Quezon Power (Philippines) Limited Co. owned by the Electricity Generating Public Co. of Thailand.

    Earlier, Lawrence Fernandez, Meralco vice president and head of utility economics department, said the capacity offered by the eight bidders totaled 1,870 MW or more than three times the power it seeks under CSP.

    Each bidder is required to offer a minimum of 150 MW. 

    The 15-year CSP begins on 26 August 2025. 

    The deadline for the submission of bids is on 2 August this year.
