    PH, Lao PDR forge new agri cooperation agreement

    Rome, Italy — Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. of the Philippines and Linkham Douangsavanh, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry from Lao PDR, convened at the World Food Forum to discuss a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing agricultural collaboration. The meeting, held at the Food and Agriculture Organization’s headquarters, is designed to boost food security and sustainable agricultural practices in both nations and the broader ASEAN region.

    “The proposed agreement marks a significant step forward in strengthening agricultural cooperation with our ASEAN partner, Lao PDR,” said Tiu Laurel. The MOU includes initiatives such as establishing a joint genetic bank for rice development, improving agricultural value chains, and enhancing food security across ASEAN.

    Key components of the MOU also focus on sustainable water management, research and development collaboration, climate change mitigation strategies, effective pest management, and the promotion of agri-food trade. This agreement reflects a mutual commitment to building resilient agricultural sectors, ultimately aiming for a secure and sustainable food future.
