Telcos under pressure as Typhoon Kristine batters PH

In response to the disruptive impact of Typhoon Kristine (international name: Trami), the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has issued a directive to the country’s telecommunication providers to ensure uninterrupted service during the storm’s aftermath.

In a memorandum, the NTC mandated public telecommunications entities (PTEs) to mobilize adequate personnel and deploy standby generators equipped with extra fuel, essential tools, and spare equipment in regions expected to be hardest hit by the typhoon.

“PTEs must prioritize the rapid repair and restoration of services in the event of disruptions caused by the storm,” the NTC said. Additionally, telecom companies have been instructed to activate “Libreng Tawag” (free calls) and “Libreng Charging Stations” in affected areas to assist those in need.

As of 23 October 2024, significant service outages have been reported across the Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas due to widespread power interruptions. Minor outages have also been noted in CALABARZON and Northern Luzon.

Globe Telecom has indicated severe service disruptions, with outages ranging from 75 percent to 92 percent in provinces such as Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, and Camarines Norte. Similarly, Smart Communications is grappling with challenges stemming from severe flooding in the Bicol Region, while Converge has reported disruptions in multiple locations.

Despite the challenging conditions, Globe has achieved partial restoration of services in Leyte and Southern Leyte, while Converge reports a 32 percent restoration in impacted areas. Telecom companies are actively deploying personnel to expedite repairs where conditions allow.

In a proactive move, SpaceX’s Starlink has offered its satellite internet services to Filipino first responders, facilitating rescue and relief operations during this critical time.

The NTC is closely monitoring the evolving situation and collaborating with telecom companies to expedite service restoration, ensuring that individuals affected by the typhoon can remain connected with their families and communities during this challenging period.
