Philippines harnessing global wind expertise in bid for energy independence

The country’s renewable energy sector is poised for a major leap forward with the announcement of a strategic partnership between the Coastal Renewable Energy Technology Center (CRETC) and German wind technology provider Ammonit GmbH. This collaboration aims to enhance wind resource assessment capabilities across the archipelago, a critical step in the country’s efforts to strengthen energy independence and sustainability.

In a statement, both organizations emphasized their commitment to providing advanced, reliable wind measurement tools essential for the Philippines’ diverse and challenging environmental conditions. Peter Castro, vice president and general manager of CRETC, expressed confidence that the partnership would help reduce carbon emissions, improve energy security, and drive the growth of the renewable energy sector. “By integrating Ammonit’s globally recognized technology with our local expertise, we can empower communities and accelerate the shift towards a greener future,” Castro said.

The collaboration comes at a pivotal time for the Philippines, where wind power accounts for just a small fraction of the national energy mix. As of the end of 2023, the country had 427 megawatts (MW) of on-grid wind capacity, making up just 1.5 percent of total electricity generation. The partnership aims to improve wind resource assessments, a crucial factor in optimizing energy yields and minimizing investment risks as the nation works to expand its renewable energy capacity.

CRETC, which focuses on coastal renewable energy development, and Ammonit GmbH, known for its expertise in high-quality wind measurement technology, are positioned to play a significant role in helping the Philippines reach its renewable energy goals and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. This partnership marks a key milestone in the nation’s transition toward a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
