SMPC breaks 2024 coal shipment record, sustains full production for third year

Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) has set a new benchmark in coal shipments for 2024, reaching a historic 16.5 million metric tons (MT)—surpassing last year’s record of 15.8 million MT. This achievement underscores SMPC’s resilience and operational excellence as it continues to meet the growing global and domestic demand for energy.

The record shipments were driven by a 46 percent increase in exports to China, which saw 7.6 million MT of coal shipped, and a 4 percent rise in domestic shipments, bolstered by higher sales to local cement manufacturers and Calaca power plants. In particular, 20 percent of the 1.3 million MT delivered to cement plants went to SMPC’s affiliate, Cemex Holdings Philippines Inc. (CHP).

“For the third consecutive year, we have achieved our maximum coal production capacity of 16 million MT, under our existing Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). This milestone reflects the unwavering dedication of the SMPC team in supporting the rising local and global energy demands,” said Maria Cristina C. Gotianun, president, COO, and chief sustainability officer of SMPC.

Looking ahead, Gotianun noted that while market prices are expected to normalize in 2025, the company remains focused on strengthening its customer base and enhancing operational efficiencies to continue supporting national energy security, particularly for the industrial and cement sectors.

This historic performance solidifies SMPC’s role as a key player in the energy sector, both domestically and in the global market.
