Public satisfaction with Marcos Jr. and Duterte declines amid economic and transparency concerns

In the December 2024 Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, public satisfaction with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte showed a notable shift, reflecting growing concerns over the economy and governance transparency. The survey, conducted from 12 to 18 December, found that Marcos’ satisfaction rating dropped 13 percentage points to +19, while Duterte’s rating fell by 6 points to +21.

Marcos Jr.’s decline in public approval, particularly in Mindanao, is largely attributed to frustrations over inflation and the perceived inadequacy of his administration’s response to rising living costs. Meanwhile, Duterte’s ratings dropped amid ongoing scrutiny over the handling of confidential and intelligence funds, which have raised transparency concerns and sparked impeachment calls.

While both leaders retain majority satisfaction ratings, the narrowing gap between their figures signals potential shifts in public opinion. Analysts suggest that both officials will need to address these concerns to restore trust and ensure effective governance moving into 2025.
