SM Prime, TeaM Energy partner on solar initiative

SM Prime Holdings, Inc., the integrated property development arm of the Sy Group, has partnered with TeaM (Philippines) Energy Corporation to install over 33,000 square meters of solar panels across four SM malls.

This renewable energy project, set to begin construction in March 2025 with full operations expected by year-end, represents a significant step toward SM Prime’s sustainability goals and renewable energy commitment.

The solar installations, located at SM City Lucena, SM City Sta. Mesa, SM City Tarlac, and SM City East Ortigas, will have a combined capacity of approximately 7.5 megaWatts-peak (MWp). The installations are projected to generate around 11,000 megaWatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, meeting about 16 percent of each mall’s electricity demand and reducing reliance on traditional power sources.

SM Prime President Jeffrey C. Lim said this renewable energy integration is central to the company’s long-term strategy of achieving net-zero emissions and enhancing operational efficiency. With a strong commitment to sustainability, SM Prime is already a leader in solar energy adoption, with 44 of its 87 malls in the Philippines equipped with photovoltaic systems, contributing over 50 MWp in solar capacity.

TPEC, the retail subsidiary of TeaM Energy Corp., will utilize advanced bifacial solar panels for the project, which capture sunlight from both sides and have one of the lowest degradation rates in the industry, ensuring long-term efficiency. The solar power systems are expected to reduce approximately 4,400 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.

This partnership strengthens SM Prime’s position as a leader in renewable energy within the commercial property sector and aligns with its broader sustainability objectives.
