Nickel Asia, DMCI Mining partner for nickel plant development

Nickel Asia Corp., a major player in natural resources development, and emerging nickel producer DMCI Mining Corp. have forged a deal to jointly explore the feasibility of developing and operating a nickel processing plant in the Philippines.

The strategic partnership combines the technical expertise, resources, and mining assets of both companies, aiming to strengthen the country’s nickel processing capacity. Despite the current global oversupply of nickel, both companies remain optimistic about the sector’s future, fueled by surging demand from electric vehicles and stainless-steel industries.

Martin Antonio G. Zamora, Nickel Asia president and chief executive officer, said that establishing a successful processing plant in the country requires careful planning, particularly in navigating the complexities of government policies, regulations, and logistical challenges. “Proactive preparation is key,” he said, highlighting the importance of aligning multiple factors to ensure long-term success.

Tulsi Das C. Reyes, President of DMCI Mining, said the collaboration with Nickel Asia is about creating jobs and promoting the sustainable use of the nation’s mineral resources. He also stressed that early groundwork will position the Philippines as a significant player in the global nickel supply chain.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, Nickel Asia will lend its expertise in nickel processing technology, while DMCI Mining will contribute assets and engineering capabilities. Over the next two to three years, the companies will focus on selecting optimal plant locations, securing steady ore supply, and determining the equity structure for a potential joint venture, with a focus on processing low-grade nickel ore for domestic value.
