The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said on Thursday the construction of the new EDSA Busway Concourse at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City should be completed by the end of this year.
Transport Secretary Vince Dizon shared this update, saying that SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SMPHI) is overseeing the construction of the facility. “The SM Group has donated the EDSA Busway Concourses at SM North EDSA and SM Megamall, and will also donate the future SM MOA EDSA Busway Concourse,” Dizon said at the opening of the SM North EDSA Busway Concourse.
Strategically positioned in front of SM Megamall, the new concourse will serve as a vital interchange for commuters traveling along EDSA. The facility will enhance access to various transport options and commercial establishments, easing the daily commute for thousands of passengers.
The state-of-the-art concourse will feature well-lit, covered walkways, ramps, and elevators designed for accessibility. These additions aim to provide safer and more convenient travel for senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), aligning with the DOTr’s goal for a Comfortable, Accessible, Safe, Sustainable, and Affordable (CASSA) transportation system.
Dizon said the SM North EDSA and SM Megamall concourses are “model stations” for the planned expansion of bridgeways throughout the EDSA carousel system. The improvements are part of the DOTr’s flagship EDSA Busway Project, which, supported by the DPWH and MMDA, seeks to improve mass transit efficiency, safety, and accessibility along Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare.
The partnership between the DOTr and SMPHI will fast-track the development of the concourses, with SM Prime committed to designing, constructing, and managing the busway facilities located near its malls along EDSA.
