Meralco subsidiary launches 52.8 MW solar project in Isabela

Meralco PowerGen Corp. renewable energy arm, MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGreen), has successfully launched a 52.8-megawatt (MW) MGreen Cordon Solar power plant in Cordon, Isabela. This marks MGreen as one of the largest operational solar plants in the Cagayan Valley region under the Department of Energy’s (DOE) second Green Energy Auction program.

The project, completed four months ahead of schedule, is expected to provide clean and reliable electricity to over 53,000 households in the area. Additionally, the plant will help reduce carbon emissions by displacing over 50,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually—equivalent to taking more than 11,700 gasoline-powered cars off the road.

The DOE also highlighted the positive impact on the host community, with job creation and financial benefits through the Energy Regulations 1-94 program. This program allocates one centavo per kilowatt-hour of generated power to fund social, economic, and environmental initiatives in project-hosting communities.

MGreen’s efforts to expand its renewable energy portfolio continue with plans to add 85.2 MW of solar capacity this year. Future projects include the completion of another solar facility in Cordon, Isabela, and an expansion in Baras, Rizal. MGreen is poised to significantly contribute to the country’s renewable energy goals, supporting both environmental sustainability and local economic development.

MGreen is a subsidiary of MGen, which, in turn, is part of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) group.
