MRT-3 extends service hours to relieve commuters amid transport challenges

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Monday announced a change to the MRT-3 schedule, extending its operating hours to help ease the daily commute for passengers, especially those facing long queues during peak hours.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed the extension is a response to the growing number of commuters and the need to address congestion at key MRT-3 stations. The new schedule, from Monday to Friday, will see evening operations continue later than usual, offering more flexibility for those working late or needing to travel outside regular hours.

“Officially starting today, the MRT-3 hours have been extended. This will continue, and we hope it helps our commuters, particularly those staying up late for work or other important matters,” Dizon stated. He also revealed that additional trains have been deployed to reduce overcrowding and ensure smoother operations, particularly during the busy morning and afternoon peak periods.

The MRT-3 extension schedule is as follows:

    • North Ave. Southbound: Closing time at 10:25 PM; Last Train Departure at 10:30 PM
    • Taft Ave. Northbound: Closing time at 11:04 PM; Last Train Departure at 11:09 PM

In response also to the ongoing transport strike by Manibela, Dizon also confirmed that the LRT-1 will add an extra train today to further alleviate the strain on the city’s public transport system.

This new initiative comes after Dizon’s inspection of the MRT-3 on 17 March, when he observed firsthand the need for better services to manage the rising passenger volume.

To further assist commuters, updated signages have been placed at all 13 MRT-3 stations to guide passengers about the new extended train schedules.

The changes come at a time of increasing pressure on public transport systems in Metro Manila. While the new schedules provide relief for many, regular maintenance during weekends means that the last commercial train on Saturdays and Sundays will operate earlier than on weekdays: the last train from North Avenue departs at 9:30 PM, while the final train from Taft Avenue leaves at 10:09 PM.
