In preparation for the upcoming dry season, Maynilad Water Services Inc., the West Zone concessionaire, is ramping up its fire prevention and emergency response efforts to support communities and enhance firefighting operations.
With the dry months in mind, Maynilad is prioritizing the maintenance of its 4,500 fire hydrants across its 7,915-kilometer distribution network, ensuring they are fully functional through regular inspections and upkeep. Maynilad gave assurance the measures would bolster the safety of local communities during the hot months when fire risks increase.
The company is also actively working with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and local government units by providing hydrant location maps, monitoring water pressure at fire sites, and maintaining open communication lines with emergency responders. Maynilad regularly conducts joint inspections with the BFP and has equipped firefighters with hydrant keys for swift access. Additionally, Maynilad deploys water tankers to areas that need extra water supply during emergencies.
To address challenges faced in congested urban areas where fire trucks have difficulty accessing narrow streets and alleys, Maynilad has introduced fire trailers. These specialized trailers are designed to reach locations that traditional fire trucks cannot. The company has already donated five 1,000-liter fire trailers to various cities, including Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Pasay, and Imus, with plans to distribute more this year. Each trailer is equipped with a 20-meter adjustable hose, solar-powered lights, and a five-horsepower pump capable of reaching up to the seventh floor of a building, projecting water up to 70 feet.
Additionally, Maynilad has made strides in optimizing water usage during emergencies. Through memoranda of understanding, the company allows the BFP to access treated wastewater for firefighting purposes. This initiative reduces reliance on potable water while ensuring that firefighting operations remain effective.
As the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines, Maynilad serves a wide range of customers across Metro Manila and Cavite, providing essential services to cities such as Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Pasay, and Muntinlupa, among others. With these proactive measures, the company is reinforcing its commitment to community safety and effective emergency response during the hotter months.
