East Asian languages catch fire in Indonesia

Indonesia ranks among Duolingo’s five fastest-growing global markets by daily active user growth, reflecting huge national demand for language learning. CEO Luis von Ahn confirmed this during talks with Indonesian creator Raditya Dika at Duolingo’s New York office, saying “We’re very interested in the Indonesian market” and highlighting plans to expand English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other language courses for local users.

Indonesia ranks high among learners motivated by educational pursuits-37 percent above the global average-and 41 percent more likely to learn for meaningful personal growth. English tops all languages studied, while Chinese interest has nearly tripled since 2023 to join Japanese in the top three. Learners also combine languages far more than average: studying English and Chinese together is 4.15 times more common, Japanese and Chinese 3.3 times, and English and Japanese 2.8 times, showing broad focus on East Asian languages alongside English.

This growth aligns with Duolingo’s core mission. Raised in Guatemala, von Ahn saw how wealth limited education access and built the platform to serve everyone equally. “I wanted to give equal access to education to all,” he said, emphasizing free access for those unable to pay. Courses now reach B2 proficiency across nine key tracks, and AI-powered speaking practice lets users practice without fear of judgment—perfect for learners building confidence for school, work and daily use.

Duolingo ranks high among the world’s mobile learning platforms.
