Australian aerospace start-up Drone Forge has collaborated with Airbus, signing a letter of intent (LOI) to deploy and integrate Airbus’ uncrewed aerial system (UAS) called Flexrotor. The partnership, which includes the acquisition of Flexrotor systems, marks a step in advancing uncrewed aviation, with a particular focus on tactical operations within the defense and security sectors.
Airbus Helicopters vice president William Sampson said the agreement reflects a commitment to exploring innovative Flexrotor technologies, underscoring its role as a force multiplier for diverse missions. The Flexrotor, an unscrewed vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft, boasts of a maximum launch weight of 25 kg (55 lbs) designed for long-duration ISTAR missions. Its flexibility in payload integration and autonomous operational capabilities in challenging environments, such as maritime and forest fire surveillance, make it a highly versatile solution.
Drone Forge CEO Thomas Symes described the partnership as a transformative development for the UAV industry, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, where commercial, government, and defense sectors present significant opportunities. The partnership will deliver a robust, certified, and safe UAV solution, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to world-class support and performance.
The collaboration extends beyond technology integration, with Drone Forge establishing a UAS service center in Perth, Australia, to provide essential training, maintenance, and support for Flexrotor systems. This service center is poised to cater to a growing demand for UAV solutions, further solidifying the companies’ commercial strategy.
With the Flexrotor already proving its capabilities in maritime security exercises and parapublic missions, this partnership positions Airbus and Drone Forge to meet increasing global demand for flexible, mission-ready UAVs across a variety of sectors.
