Manila Water Infratech rolls out first i-TECH sewage plant in Calbayog

Manila Water Infratech Solutions (MWIS), a subsidiary of Manila Water focused on water and wastewater infrastructure, has launched its first i-TECH Packaged Sewer Treatment Plant (STP) in Calbayog City, marking a significant milestone in the adoption of advanced sanitation technologies in the region.

The i-TECH Packaged STP, installed at the Calbayog Water Septage Treatment Facility, integrates membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat up to 10 cubic meters of wastewater per day, with scalability to 20 cubic meters. This system ensures compliance with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) effluent standards, addressing rising wastewater treatment demand projected to serve 15,000 households within five years.

Beyond regulatory compliance, the plant introduces economically valuable reuse features. Treated effluent can be redirected for non-potable purposes such as irrigation and cleaning, while residual sludge can be repurposed as fertilizer—advancing the circular bioeconomy and reducing waste.

Engr. Jose Paulo Serias, MWIS general manager, highlighted the project as a step forward in sustainable infrastructure. “The i-TECH STP not only ensures environmental compliance but also drives resource conservation and circularity,” Serias said.

The deployment supports MWIS’s broader strategy to commercialize scalable, eco-friendly wastewater solutions, positioning the firm for further expansion in underserved urban and rural markets. The Calbayog initiative signals growing opportunities in the wastewater technology sector, particularly as municipalities seek compact, efficient, and regulation-compliant treatment options.
