PLDT, Smart use AI and mobile tech to support persons with disabilities in Manila

Telecommunications company PLDT and its wireless arm Smart are using artificial intelligence and everyday mobile technology to help persons with disabilities (PWDs) gain better access to education, jobs, and livelihood opportunities in Manila and nearby cities.

Through its IDEATe (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advocacy through Technology) program, the PLDT Group partnered with ATRIEV to train PWDs, teachers, and advocates on AI-powered accessibility tools, smartphone features, and basic digital business skills. In 2024, around 300 persons with disabilities were trained to use digital tools that can help them study, work, or run small businesses.

One key initiative, AI for Accessibility, trained special education teachers and advocates in Manila, Makati, Taguig, and Pateros to use generative AI, screen readers, and speech-to-text tools to make learning more inclusive for children with disabilities. PLDT and Smart also expanded Android Accessibility Training, helping people with visual impairment turn smartphones into assistive devices. In 2025, the program was extended to students with autism, intellectual disability, and other neurodevelopmental conditions through interactive reading and math apps.

Beyond education, the companies also supported livelihood programs. Participants learned how to start small businesses, design marketing materials, sell online, and manage basic finances. Some graduates formed a vendors association and were invited to sell products at PLDT and Smart bazaars in Manila. Skills training in social media marketing, bookkeeping, and virtual assistance was also offered to women with disabilities and caregivers, allowing them to work remotely.

PLDT and Smart said the goal is to make technology work for everyone, especially those who face barriers to education and employment. The initiative also includes disability sensitivity training for employees to promote more inclusive workplaces. Through IDEATe, the PLDT Group said it continues to support inclusive growth in line with the UN goals on decent work and reducing inequalities.
