The International Criminal Court’s Appeals Chamber has rejected the bid of former president Rodrigo Duterte to block the tribunal’s jurisdiction, clearing the way for trial proceedings to continue. Duterte faces crimes against humanity charges over his war on drugs campaign, covering alleged killings in Davao and across the country between November 2011 and March 2019. Arrested in March 2025, he is now detained in The Hague. The ruling delivers a major setback to his defense and affirms the ICC’s authority to hear the case.
