Pinched wallets, sharper choices reshape Filipino spending

Filipino consumers are tightening their belts and reading the fine print as financial strain pushes them toward more cautious, calculated, and emotionally driven spending, according to Germaine Reyes, chief executive of Synergy Market Research + Strategic Consultancy.

Speaking at Market(In)Sights 2026, Reyes said brands can no longer rely on habit or impulse and now have to earn every peso. The shift comes as uncertainty tied to global tensions, including the US–Iran conflict, weighs on sentiment.

“At the start, it was gloomy,” Reyes said, noting that more than four in 10 consumers report their finances can no longer keep up with everyday needs and that confidence in the months ahead remains weak.

Synergy data show the squeeze tightening in real time. Financial strain rose from 32 percent in January to 36 percent in March and reached 44 percent in April. The result is a consumer who is not just spending less but thinking harder about every purchase.

Even typically resilient sectors are feeling the chill. Quick-service restaurants and canned goods makers, often go-to options in lean times, are seeing demand soften. One major QSR player held steady in February, Reyes said, before foot traffic began to thin in March, suggesting consumers are pacing their spending.

The adjustments are pragmatic. Households are making fewer impulse purchases, stretching the time between buys, and shifting to cheaper alternatives. Fast food is increasingly rationed, moving from a weekly treat to an occasional reward. Big-ticket items such as appliances, gadgets, and travel are being deferred.

Value now extends beyond price. Convenience, reliability, and a sense that brands understand consumer pressures are gaining importance. Trust is also proving decisive. 

Petron Corp. sustained positive sentiment after committing to stable prices, while some competitors saw declines.

In a tighter economy, brands are not just selling products. They are competing for confidence, and consumers are choosing carefully.
