Manulife Philippines names veteran lawyer as general counsel

Manulife Philippines has appointed seasoned legal executive Edgar Tordesillas as its new general counsel, strengthening its leadership team as the insurer sharpens its governance and risk management capabilities.

Effective July 1, Tordesillas will also join the company’s Executive Committee, bringing more than 25 years of legal and compliance experience in the Philippine financial services industry, particularly in life insurance and asset management.

The appointment marks a return to Manulife for Tordesillas, who previously served as the company’s Vice President for Legal and Compliance from 2007 to 2011.

Before rejoining the insurer, he spent 14 years as General Counsel of a multinational life insurance company, overseeing legal affairs, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, litigation, contract negotiations and enterprise-wide compliance programs.

In his new role, Tordesillas will advise senior management on legal and strategic matters, oversee corporate governance and help manage legal and regulatory risks as the company pursues its long-term growth objectives.

Manulife Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer Rahul Hora said Tordesillas’ extensive experience will reinforce the company’s governance framework while supporting its broader business strategy.

“Edgar brings deep legal and compliance expertise and a proven leadership track record that will strengthen our governance and support our strategic priorities,” Hora said.

Tordesillas said he is pleased to return to Manulife and looks forward to working closely with the leadership team to further strengthen the company’s legal and governance functions.

He added that his priorities include supporting sustainable growth, maintaining prudent risk management and advancing the insurer’s commitment to delivering better outcomes for its customers in an increasingly evolving regulatory environment.
