The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is deepening its partnership with the Alliance of Tech Innovators for the Nation (ATIN) to boost tax compliance among online sellers, combining taxpayer education with tougher enforcement as the country’s digital economy continues to expand.
BIR Commissioner Charlito Martin R. Mendoza met with ATIN President and Lead Convenor Monchito Ibrahim on July 21 to align initiatives aimed at helping online merchants and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) better understand and comply with their tax obligations.
The collaboration comes as authorities step up efforts to bring more digital businesses into the formal economy while creating a level playing field for tax-compliant enterprises.
A centerpiece of the initiative is the BIR’s tax webinar on July 28, which will guide online entrepreneurs and MSMEs through registration requirements, filing obligations and other tax responsibilities. ATIN committed to supporting the Bureau’s taxpayer education campaign and expressed interest in working with the agency on future digital compliance initiatives, while inviting the BIR to participate in programs organized by the technology alliance.
The meeting also tackled the rollout of the mandatory BIR Seal Badge, a new requirement intended to help consumers easily identify registered and tax-compliant online sellers across digital platforms.
ATIN updated the Bureau on compliance monitoring tools being developed by e-commerce platforms to help merchants obtain and display the required Seal Badge more efficiently.
For its part, the BIR said it would intensify information campaigns while extending assistance to businesses that comply with registration requirements. At the same time, the agency signaled it would take a tougher stance against noncompliant merchants, including issuing takedown orders against online sellers that deliberately refuse to register.
The enhanced collaboration reflects the government’s broader effort to formalize the fast-growing digital marketplace, widen the tax base and improve consumer confidence. By pairing education with enforcement, the BIR and ATIN hope to encourage greater voluntary compliance while supporting the continued growth of legitimate online businesses and the country’s expanding digital economy.
