Uniqlo sees Philippine growth runway beyond 81 stores

Japanese apparel retailer Uniqlo believes the Philippine market still has ample room for expansion, signaling confidence in the country’s long-term consumer story even as inflation and elevated living costs continue to pressure household budgets.

Speaking during the company’s celebration of the 70th anniversary of Philippines-Japan diplomatic relations at the Uniqlo Manila Global Flagship Store in Makati, Uniqlo Philippines Chief Operating Officer Geraldine Sia said the retailer’s strategy has evolved beyond simply opening more branches.

“Our expansion is about more than just the number of stores,” Sia said. “We have to make sure that LifeWear is available and accessible to our Filipino customers.”

The retailer now operates 81 stores nationwide after 15 years in the Philippines, but Sia said the company still sees opportunities to broaden its footprint across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao through new mall and roadside stores, supported by investments in logistics and digital services.

The expansion comes as global fashion brands continue to compete for a bigger share of the Philippine retail market, one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing consumer economies, where rising urbanization and a young population have continued to attract international retailers despite periodic pressure on household spending.

“I believe so,” Sia said when asked whether Uniqlo still had room to grow. “We continue to have our long-term commitment to the Filipinos by expanding our stores across the Philippines. We want them to experience LifeWear clothing.”

Despite higher food and fuel prices squeezing disposable incomes, Sia said demand has remained resilient. She attributed this to the brand’s focus on functional apparel designed for tropical climates, including AIRism, Dry-EX and UV Protection technologies.

She added that Filipino consumers increasingly prioritize versatile, durable and long-lasting clothing that can be worn for work, travel and everyday activities, helping sustain demand even as shoppers become more value-conscious.

Beyond opening more stores, Uniqlo plans to deepen its local presence through community partnerships and collaborations with Filipino designers, underscoring a long-term strategy that pairs physical expansion with stronger engagement in the Philippine market.
