Uniqlo weaves Filipino heritage into anniversary celebration

A cup of ube, a patch stitched from fabric scraps and a display inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces may not sound like the usual retail strategy.

For UNIQLO, however, they are becoming symbols of something bigger, celebrating Filipino identity while marking nearly 15 years of doing business in the Philippines.

Ahead of its 15th anniversary in 2027, the Japanese LifeWear retailer is rolling out a year-long celebration that also coincides with the 70th anniversary of Philippines-Japan friendship.

Rather than relying solely on discounts or product launches, UNIQLO is weaving culture, craftsmanship and community into the customer experience.

One of the campaign’s standout offerings is the Ube Kome Cloud, a limited-time drink developed with Salcedo Auctions. The beverage pairs Japanese Koshihikari burnt rice milk with Bohol’s prized Ube Kinampay and coconut nectar, creating a cross-cultural blend that is as much a conversation starter as it is a coffee break.

The company is also putting Filipino artisans in the spotlight through RE.UNIQLO Special Artisan Patches, created with art director Wilson Limon and weaving communities from Abra, Iloilo and Lake Sebu. Crafted from RE.UNIQLO fabric scraps, the embroidered patches feature Itneg, Panay Bukidnon and T’boli motifs, giving worn LifeWear garments a second life while showcasing indigenous craftsmanship.

Available until Aug. 30 for P300 each, the patches blend sustainability with heritage.

Beyond fashion, UNIQLO stores are being transformed with installations inspired by Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, where Philippine landscapes meet Japanese icons such as origami lotus flowers, cranes and koi. The displays celebrate seven decades of friendship between the two countries through a shared appreciation for art and craftsmanship.

The retailer is also expanding its Japanese-inspired UT collections and UTme! customization service while launching a year-long education initiative with ABS-CBN Foundation, HOPE Foundation and SM Foundation.

The program will support 15 schools nationwide through donations, educational activities and community partnerships, proving that for UNIQLO, the road to its 15th anniversary is stitched together with culture, collaboration and purpose.
