Visa, Mastercard launch Apple Pay in Philippines today

Visa and Mastercard have officially rolled out Apple Pay in the Philippines, giving eligible cardholders a new way to make contactless payments as digital wallets gain further traction in the country’s shift toward a cash-lite economy.

The launch enables eligible Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cardholders to add their cards to Apple Pay on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad and Mac, allowing them to pay in stores, within apps and online. Each transaction is authenticated using Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode, while a unique dynamic security code is generated for every purchase.

The rollout marks another step in the evolution of the Philippine payments landscape, where consumers are increasingly embracing contactless transactions and mobile wallets for everyday purchases.

Visa said the service also caters to changing travel habits. Citing its Asia Pacific travel study, the company said 97 percent of travelers plan to carry credit, debit or prepaid cards during their trips, compared with only 17 percent who expect to bring foreign currency. Among respondents, 38 percent cited security and fraud protection as the primary reason for using cards, while 20 percent pointed to their broad acceptance.

“Apple Pay represents the next evolution of payments in the Philippines, combining ease of use, simplicity and security in every transaction,” said Jeffrey Navarro, Visa country manager for the Philippines. He added that the service offers Filipinos and international visitors a seamless way to pay across retail stores, restaurants, travel destinations and public transportation.

Mastercard Philippines Country Manager Jason Crasto said Apple Pay delivers “secure, seamless and convenient payment experiences” as digital payment adoption continues to accelerate.

Both companies emphasized that Apple Pay does not store actual card numbers on users’ devices or Apple’s servers. Instead, payment credentials are replaced with an encrypted Device Account Number stored in the device’s Secure Element, allowing users to retain the rewards and benefits linked to their Visa or Mastercard cards while strengthening payment security.

The launch broadens the range of digital payment options available to Filipino consumers as banks and payment networks continue investing in faster, more secure cashless transactions.
