The European Union (EU) is taking part in the Philippine Space Week for the third consecutive year, with the 2026 edition set to run from 8 to 14 August under the theme “Navigating Tomorrow”. The EU and the Philippines maintain a strong partnership through the Global Gateway initiative, with a key focus on applying knowledge and technology from Copernicus, the Earth Observation arm of the EU’s space programme. The partnership has already established the first Copernicus Data Centre in Southeast Asia in the Philippines, which is now growing into a regional hub.
In line with this year’s celebration, the EU will run a series of Earth Observation training activities. Sessions include land cover and forest mapping held with the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority on 5 and 6 August, followed by ground motion monitoring training with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on 10 August. A special workshop on strengthening EU–Philippines Earth Observation cooperation will take place on 12 August, covering lessons from the CopPhil initiative and the EU-PH Digital Economy Package, along with an information and planning session led by the EU and Finland. Training on crop mapping in partnership with the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Soils and Water Management is scheduled for 13 August.
On 9 August, the EU will set up a Copernicus Booth at Quantum Skyview in Gateway Mall 2, Araneta City, where visitors can learn more about the Copernicus Data Centre. The EU and the Philippine Space Agency will also hold a careers panel discussion on Earth Observation together with the Space Generation Advisory Council, designed to inspire students and young professionals to pursue opportunities in the country’s space and Earth observation sectors.
