foodpanda budgets P20M to protect riders this rainy season

foodpanda Philippines is investing about P20 million in additional financial support and safety measures for its delivery riders during the peak rainy season, underscoring the growing focus of digital platforms on rider welfare as increasingly volatile weather disrupts operations.

The company said the package, which runs from June to August, combines higher earnings, operational adjustments, and enhanced safety protocols to help riders navigate heavy rains while maintaining essential delivery services.

A key component of the initiative is real-time weather monitoring, allowing foodpanda to automatically suspend or restrict deliveries in areas affected by severe weather or flooding.

“Our partner riders are essential to keeping local communities going, and their health and safety will always come before any delivery,” said Kyrinne Kate Viaje, Country Fleet Health Head of foodpanda Logistics Philippines.

“Our priority during severe weather is to equip riders with the right information and complete autonomy to decide when it is safe to be on the road. When operations are active during mild to moderate rain, we want to ensure those who choose to log on are fairly compensated for the extra time and care required,” she added.

For deliveries completed during safe but rainy conditions, riders will receive additional incentives of P10 to P15 per order to help offset slower traffic, detours, and more difficult road conditions. The platform also sends advance weather alerts through its app, allowing riders to adjust their schedules ahead of forecasted rainfall without penalties.

Beyond the seasonal program, foodpanda continues to provide year-round training on defensive riding, emergency preparedness, and safe driving during adverse weather.

The company also appealed to customers for patience during periods of inclement weather, noting that deliveries may take longer because of safety precautions. Customers may also voluntarily tip riders through the app, with 100 percent of tips going directly to delivery partners.

The initiative reflects how delivery platforms are increasingly balancing service reliability with worker protection as extreme weather events become more frequent, making rider safety a more prominent operational priority.
