Pet nutrition drives Philippines premium pet food demand growth

The way Filipinos feed their pets is changing, and so is the business behind it.
Nearly half of Filipino households now own a dog or cat, creating an estimated 14 million pet-owning homes in 2025, up from around 12 million in 2021, according to Euromonitor. Riding that trend, the Philippine dog food market expanded by 10 percent in retail value in 2026 as consumers increasingly traded up to premium, functional and veterinarian-formulated diets, turning pet nutrition into one of the fastest-growing niches in the local consumer market.
The questions pet parents ask have evolved just as quickly.
A few years ago, many focused on flavor, convenience or price. Today, they want to know where ingredients come from, how they are sourced, and whether a product supports digestive health, immunity and healthy aging.
“Pet parents today are asking more thoughtful questions. They’re no longer just asking what’s popular,” said Romy Sia, managing director of Bow & Wow Philippines, one of the country’s largest specialty pet retailers with seven stores across Metro Manila, Laguna and Cebu.
“They want to understand where ingredients come from, how they’re formulated, and how they support their pet’s health throughout every stage of life. We’re seeing a clear shift from simply feeding pets to nourishing them for lifelong wellness.”
The trend mirrors a broader consumer shift toward preventive healthcare. Euromonitor identifies “Wellness Pragmatists” as one of the strongest forces shaping purchasing decisions, with consumers placing greater emphasis on products that promote long-term health rather than simply treating problems after they arise.
As consumers become more discerning, retailers are also raising their standards. Before reaching store shelves, products are evaluated for ingredient quality, nutritional formulation, sourcing and manufacturing practices. Brands are expected to comply with internationally recognized Good Manufacturing Practice standards and the nutritional guidelines of the Association of American Feed Control Officials.
Bow & Wow said its portfolio includes science-backed global brands such as Schesir, Open Farm, Natural Balance and Health Extension, each designed to meet different nutritional needs across every stage of a pet’s life.
But better products alone do not always guarantee better choices.
Many owners are discovering that the ideal diet depends on factors such as age, breed, lifestyle and existing health conditions. A puppy’s nutritional requirements differ from those of a senior dog, while indoor cats may need different formulations than more active pets.
Recognizing the growing demand for guidance, Bow & Wow recently launched a complimentary Nutrition Consultation Service at its Robinsons Magnolia branch for members. The consultations provide personalized advice on issues ranging from digestive concerns and food sensitivities to weight management, picky eating, and life-stage nutrition.
“As pet parents become more proactive about their pets’ health, access to the right guidance is just as important as access to quality nutrition,” Sia said. “Our goal is to help them better understand their pets’ needs so they can make informed choices for healthier, happier lives.”
As the country’s pet economy continues to mature, retailers are discovering that the next competitive edge may not be selling more pet food, but helping owners make smarter decisions about what goes into the bowl. One increasingly follows the other.
