LRMC pulls LRT-1 train from service after leak, tightens maintenance for commuter safety

Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC), operator of LRT-1, immediately removed a fourth-generation train from service after detecting a water leak inside one carriage, acting swiftly to protect passenger comfort and reliability. Confirming the isolated incident, the maintenance team responded at once, with a technician boarding to inspect the unit and recommending its withdrawal from revenue service for full depot assessment. The root cause was traced to a defective valve in the air-conditioning unit drain line, which broke prematurely—well before its expected three- to five-year lifespan. The valve has since been replaced, and the train is undergoing comprehensive safety checks before being cleared to resume operations.

For commuters, the incident underscores LRMC’s real-time operational vigilance: early detection and immediate action prevent minor issues from escalating into service disruptions or safety concerns. Going forward, the operator is strengthening maintenance protocols, doubling inspection frequency for these critical valves from every 10,000 kilometers to 5,000 kilometers, with a long-term plan to replace the valves across the entire fleet to prevent future leaks. “LRMC remains dedicated to providing our passengers with a safe, comfortable, and reliable journey on LRT-1 every day,” the company said, reinforcing its commitment to consistent, proactive care that directly benefits the thousands who rely on the line daily.
