SM Investments Corporation, parent firm of the SM Group, has forged a partnership with the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) to integrate official hazard and risk data into the planning and management of its properties and operations nationwide. The collaboration, formalized through a memorandum of agreement signed by Timothy Daniels, SM Investments Consultant and Head of Investor Relations and Sustainability, and PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito C. Bacolcol, grants SM access to and use of the GeoRiskPH platform, a centralized government system housing comprehensive natural hazard and risk information.
Under the agreement, SM will leverage key GeoRiskPH tools including HazardHunterPH Pro, Geomapper PH, PlanSmart, and GeoAnalyticsPH to evaluate hydrometeorological and geological risks across its facilities, assets, and operational sites. Data and insights generated from these tools will guide the company’s strategic decisions regarding property development, business continuity planning, and long-term capital investments.
Dr. Bacolcol noted that public-private partnerships such as this advance national disaster risk reduction and sustainable development, as private sector adoption of data-driven hazard assessment strengthens collective resilience. Mr. Daniels emphasized that the partnership aligns with SM’s long-standing investment philosophy, stating that access to authoritative scientific data enables more informed decisions on where and how to deploy capital while protecting both business interests and the communities it serves. The initiative underscores SM’s commitment to climate adaptation and disaster resilience, embedding government-verified scientific analysis into core processes from asset management to expansion planning. It also demonstrates how private enterprise can support national resilience goals by integrating hazard intelligence into commercial growth strategies.
